The Dairy Project’s AI trainings are empowering unemployed rural youth to become trained Artificial Insemination Technicians (AITs) for dairy breed improvement and kick start their businesses as small-scale entrepreneurs. The overall aim is to ensure that through better breeding, farmers are able to increase their milk production and incomes. To be in compliance with the new Punjab Livestock Breeding Act, the Dairy Project readjusted its AIT training duration and curriculum. The Dairy Project and DRDF continue to provide extensive follow-up and support to the AITs post-training.

The Dairy Project aims to train 2,445 Artificial Insemination Technicians (AITs). As of April 2016, 2,382 AITs have been trained and are now providing breed improvement services to farmers, where on average an AIT provides his services to 9 nearby villages. They earn on average an income of PKR9,139/- per month ($90 approx.). Furthermore, motorbikes are awarded to the high performing AITs on cost sharing basis to help them commute easily between villages and provide timely insemination services.
