Raising the Standards

Muhammad Tariq, being the only bread winner of the house, was finding it difficult to make ends meet with his economic condition. However all that was about to change.

Tariq read about the Artificial Insemination (A.I) training opportunity being provided by the USAID-DRDF Dairy Project in a local newspaper. Upon applying for the A.I training, he was called for an interview and was soon selected for the training program. Through the program, he learned theoretical and practical knowledge pertaining to A.I such as palpation, vulva opening, rod passing, thawing, gun loading, internal reproductive anatomy, and pregnancy diagnosis.

“I have inseminated 145 animals with a conception rate of about 75% leading to considerable increase in my monthly income. My current income is PKR 19,700, which is three times more than what I was earning at my previous employment,” says Tariq.

“I provide timely quality A.I services to the farmers at their doorstep at an affordable price. My customers are satisfied with my services and appreciate Dairy Project’s effort in enabling me to work as a certified A.I technician,” he adds.

Other than providing A.I services, Tariq also run a small business of selling nutritious mineral mixtures to the local dairy farmer and performs pregnancy tests, which adds another PKR 18,00 to his monthly income. With the help of this additional income, Tariq is now able to provide better health care facilities to his family.

The USAID – DRDF Dairy Project’s AI trainings are empowering unemployed rural youth to become trained Artificial Insemination Technicians (AITs) for dairy breed improvement and to kick start their businesses as small-scale entrepreneurs. As of May 2016, over 2,445 AITs have been trained and are now providing breed improvement services to farmers in over 20,000 villages across Pakistan, with an average income of PKR 10,500/- (approx. USD 100).
